What’s the problem?
Over the past several years, there has been a considerable amount of controversy over Bayer’s marketing of Mirena. In 2009, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) sent a warning letter to the company claiming that it had been overstating the benefits of Mirena while simultaneously downplaying the risks of the device. According to the FDA’s letter, “[The script] overstates the efficacy of Mirena, presents unsubstantiated claims, minimizes the risks of using Mirena, and includes false or misleading presentations regarding Mirena.”
As a result, large numbers of unsuspecting women were implanted with the Mirena IUD without having been made aware of the possible side effects associated with the device. Among the most commonly reported health complications to be linked to Mirena are:
- Device migration
- Perforation of the uterus
- Embedment in the uterine lining
- Erosion of adjacent areas such as the vagina
- Inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and internal organs (Peritonitis)
- Intestinal perforations or obstruction
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Ovarian cysts
- Irregular spotting or bleeding
- Painful menstruation
- Pelvic pain
- Breast tenderness
- Streptococcal sepsis
- Ectopic Pregnancy
- Intrauterine pregnancy
- Wrongful death
